Movie「SHIOMACHI〜in the Quiet of the Tide〜」
Once a bustling base port for the distant-water fishing fleets of salmon and trout, Tsuda Fishing Port is now only home to a handful of elderly fishermen, including Teruhiko, who continue to fish with shore seine nets and fixed nets, albeit on a small scale. Rumors are circulating about the possible merger of their fishing cooperative with a nearby port. Despite the situation, Teruhiko's daily routine remains unchanged. Every morning, he goes to the coast to gaze at the sea, exchanging casual greetings with his childhood friend, Setsu, the president of a fisheries company, who also enjoys a morning walk.
Into this quiet port town arrives Shinichi, a young man who has been forced out of a company-owned housing unit after the collapse of a hotel due to the COVID-19 recession. With no support from his family, he stuffs his life belongings into his car and becomes a homeless person. One morning, while asleep in his car, he is mistaken for a dead body by SireBorn, an Indonesian technical intern from the fisheries company, who comes to feed the port’s cat. This sparks a commotion that involves Teruhiko, who happens to be passing by.
The story weaves together the lives of two elderly childhood friends, a young man who has lost his job, and an Indonesian Muslim girl learning about work in Japan. Themes of "unfulfilled desires," "unwavering hopes," "impossible dreams," and "resigned aspirations" swirl around the characters as they navigate their personal struggles. The beautiful imagery of this human love story unfolds under the direction of Touma Miyoshi, who was born and raised in this town and loves the sea.
